Understanding American Odds

American odds are shown with + or - symbols:

  • Positive odds (+150): Shows how much you'd win on a $100 bet
  • Negative odds (-150): Shows how much you need to bet to win $100

Implied Probability

Implied probability shows how likely the sportsbook thinks something is to happen, based on the odds they set:

  • Higher odds mean lower probability (less likely to happen)
  • Lower odds mean higher probability (more likely to happen)

Note: The sportsbook adds a margin (called "vig" or "vigorish") to the odds to ensure they make a profit. This is why:

  • The implied probabilities typically add up to more than 100%
  • For example, if two outcomes both show 50% implied probability, the actual total might be 52-53%
  • This extra percentage is the sportsbook's commission on bets
